You don't need a Class 1 medical to apply, but if successful, you'll eventually need to hold one. Please check the requirements for the role which says you need to be 'Able to obtain and hold a UK CAA Class 1 medical with no restrictions and meet British Airways medical criteria'. https://careers.ba.com/job/heathrow/speedbird-pilot-academy/22348/64018121712

It could be a good idea at some point to get a Class 1 to understand whether you will be able to meet the CAA's requirements for this licence rather than finding out later in the process (after committing a lot of time and energy) that you can't gain a Class 1. As an example, when I was training to become a pilot, I was only required to get a Class 2 medical as part of my PPL, however I decided to get a Class 1 so I can be sure of whether can meet the requirements in time, if I decided to progress on the commercial flying route. In any case, I'd advise that you double check with the CAA what the full requirements are of the medical in advance, to get an idea on whether there will be anything that may prevent you from being able to hold one - more info here: https://www.caa.co.uk/Commercial-industry/Pilot-licences/Medical/Apply-for-a-Class-1-medical-certificate/
