Hi, I am a 42 year old teacher with 20 years experience in my profession since university! I have no flight experience whatsoever but have been thinking about a career change for a while now. What advice would you suggest for someone in my situation?

Luke J. asked a question to Kate R.

My flight experience is extremely minimal but I feel I have the necessary skills to train up and become a pilot one day! What is the best route at my age?

    Hi Luke.

Many people decide to become pilots after another career and the skills you have from teaching will be valuable. We look for people with good standards in areas like communication, teamwork, leadership, decision making, workload management, professional standards and situational awareness.

There are sponsored schemes available where you get your training paid for or partly paid for or you can pay to learn either full time or by a modular route. British Airways sometimes have the opportunity to complete our assessments and to be offered a provisional job at the end depending on levels met during training and availability of positions.

You can find more information at https://careers.ba.com/future-pilots.

If you are thinking of applying to the Speedbird Pilot Academy we would recommend getting a taster flight if you haven’t had previous experience in aviation. I would also recommend joining a webinar to find out more and you should find a link to this on by searching for Speedbird Zoom.

I hope this is helpful and good luck with the career change.

    Kate
