For the cabin mechanic pathway, can I have engineering experience outside the aviation industry?

I am a security engineer and have been looking to become a mechanic for an airline. I have heard a while back that you were able to hire from other vocations outside aviation, however the job description states that 'at least 12 months demonstrable experience in aircraft maintenance' is required.
