Hi, I would like to apply to become cabin crew at BA but will my allergy be a barrier for this?

I have an intense chlorine allergy and as far as I am aware I believe I have to complete a wet drill as part of the recruitment process to become cabin crew but all wet drills take place in pools that have chlorine which is not safe for me. What would you suggest I do? Have a great day!

Hello, could you let us know more details about your allergy - for example, is it only with longer exposure, or with any contact at all?

If it's just about time in the water, we can look at a one-to-one session to keep this to a minimum. If it's any level of chlorine, we would need to explore a non-chlorinated pool, which is possible but trickier to arrange. Once we know a bit more, we can guide you on the next steps.

    Hi,

Upon discussing with my doctor, I’m also allergic to chemicals found in non chlorinated pools.

Is the swimming part of the recruitment process a mandatory requirement or are there exceptions to the rule, if not (which I completely understand) then I think I am leaning towards a role on the ground.

Thank you for taking the time to find an answer for my question.

    Much Appreciated

    Hi, thanks for your message.

The swimming element forms part of the mandatory safety and emergency procedures training that all British Airways cabin crew must complete. It’s a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) requirement for crew to demonstrate competence in water survival drills, which take place in a pool environment.

Because this training is an essential safety component, exemptions unfortunately can’t be made. If your doctor has advised against any exposure to pool chemicals, a ground-based role may indeed be a better fit.

You can explore other opportunities across British Airways on the careers website, where there are a range of roles that still allow you to be part of the airline without the need to complete the wet drill.

    I hope that helps 😊

Hi Makaylia, thanks for your message.

You can apply for cabin crew roles directly through the British Airways careers website when recruitment is open. The best place to start is by registering for job alerts here, so you’ll be notified as soon as new opportunities become available.

It’s also worth reading through the Cabin Crew FAQ page, which explains the role, training and application process in more detail.

If you have any specific questions about the role, please let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

    I hope that helps 😊

    Dan
